Writing ARCHIVE / Other Writings

These were written during a period of personal introspection  from 1969 through 1977.

A PATH TO FOLLOW

Stories come & fables go,

as bodies live to feel the warmth.

Some will die without life's meaning;

still, they leave a path to follow.

In my life, I found no hope,

nor a place to leave my shell.

At my birth, began the end,

which gave, in turn, its way to peace.

ABOUT TO DIE

In seeking life's

profound serenity,

we must progress

through all eternity:

Trying to find it

(never to find it);

always to have it

(never to know it).

Yet still unknown

by you & I,

there it lies,

about to die.

SOME PEOPLE

Some people speak

with no need to shout,

while others don't know

what they're all about.

Some people speak,

but nothing is heard,

while others will learn

without hearing a word.

IN THE LIGHT

The ceiling rose above me

as I wandered through the door;

the walls stayed firm around me

as I sat upon the floor.

I thought that I was seeing

far beyond these present days;

I felt my soul exploring

as I came upon this phase.

*       *       *

Drifting...floating

...soaring...screaming!

...light & darkness

have one meaning.

Serenity...love

...tranquility...& peace

fuse into one,

& all is at ease.

*       *       *

The ceiling soared above me

like majestic clouds gone mad,

with raging columns scaling

all impressions that I had.

I knew that I was seeing,

far beyond those present days,

when you & I become one

in the light of all these ways.

ALONG THE HIGHWAY

Snow was scattered

in patches along the highway

as the brisk, bitter wind

bit into our tainted skins.

We found it all

pathetically unreal,

despite our fits

of satirical lampooning.

We knew, of course,

where we were going,

but didn't give a damn.

How could we after all?

With no place left to go

but home to make our stand,

we would rather watch the sunset

& smile now & then.

PILLARS

Look at them stand there,

so rigid & safe,

like pillars of death

which stand all alone.

They tried to deceive me,

by word & by action,

by giving me light

but only at night.

I felt their backs turning,

& their lungs fill with laughter.

Still, I kept going,

not stopping ever.

Now I sense them crying

for all the way I've come.

I paid the final price

when all was said & done.

THE POINTLESS LOST

The point of a sphere

can shape us all,

but never breaks us

& only keeps us here.

It seems so unreal,

but that's the way.

Wherever it is

we become what it feels.

We all want to run

(our souls want us,)

but we just wait here

to enjoy all the fun.

We seek what it seems,

& we find it,

then keep right on going,

not caring what it means.

It's the pointless dead

who make the point,

while we're the pointless lost

who just go on ahead.

HARD TO SHAKE

I found myself a world

where dreams are made at night.

The shadows run away

& leave me in the light.

Spent half the day in sleep,

but shared it all with you,

until you saw me rousing

because of what I knew.

Reality had dawned!

I found it hard to shake,

as nothing gives much laughter

except for what I take.

I've felt a lot of pain,

but now I'm off again,

not ever looking back,

nor caring where I've been.

I'm no longer dreaming,
reaching out for the sky,
nor satisfied with life
without the reasons why.

WINTER DREAMS

Winter dreams
rest heavy on my mind.
Like tattered leaves,
they live.
Like shattered schemes,
they die.

(Yet still
un-ended,
they rest
heavy
on
my mind.)

Like broken windows
that have fallen off
their shelves,
with bars of ice,
fusing in
among themselves;

Dripping & freezing
like snow clouds
from the skies,
like tainted windows
to the world,
they alter & disguise;

Leaving me
a frosty view
to the world
outside my mind,
but a crystal air within
of what I want to find.
MLP/1973

CONVALESCENT JOURNEY

I like to think of a convalescent journey
where people, bound & broken by their chains
are set free to engage in, once again,
their therapeutic harmonies.
MLP/1973

SUPERSTAR

So, you want to be
a superstar,
with heroes wounds
& doctors' hands?

Well, you just better
stay right there,
or give your life
to understand.
MLP/1974

MANNEQUIN FASHION

You wrap all your thoughts
in a silk‑threaded bag,
& you tie off the end
with your name on a tag.

The patterns you're weaving
in your mannequin fashion
disguise, while enhancing,
your lack of compassion.
MLP/1974

A PLACE TO STAY

I only promised you
a place to stay
with gently spoken words
to help you on your way.

But now my task
is more than done.
That's why I'm walking,
walking towards the sun.
MLP/1974

MEDITATION

I wasn't sure of which was up
& which was down,
so I just kind of hung around,
not making but a single sound,
(however small, it was profound,)
& found the answers…all around.
MLP/1974

LISTEN...

Listen...
to the ever‑present motion
of dreams made clear by time,
& left to cleanse our souls.

Listen...
to all our certain changes
that make us what we are,
& leave us where we were.

Listen...
we shall never stay the same,
nor find out what we want,
unless we stop &...listen...
MLP/1976

LET IT SHINE

I know how hard it is
to leave it all behind.
And it's not easy
finding what you want.

But couldn't you just try
to open up your mind?
Then take a look inside
& let it shine!
MLP/1976

DISTANT LANDS

Across the sands of long ago,
upon the regions, far & low,
from desert plain to high plateau
where daylight shines for all to know
that distant lands are much like this,
& all the wonders that we miss
are known as one in total bliss
& knowing is ...what is!

We sometimes want to touch the sky,
& other times don't even try;
so when it's time for us to die,
will all our efforts make us high,
or will we cry & feel the cold,
that makes us think of stories told,
when all was grand but never old
& always there for us to hold?
